Well, I finally did it.
I forced myself to sit down and watch episodes 1-3 of both Grey's Anatomy and Private Practice.
You may be wondering why I consider it "forcing" when talking about the top rated show for 18-49 year olds and its spin-off.
My reason is short and sweet... the Grey's finale was wretched.
I wasn't just let down... I wasn't annoyed or disappointed... I was borderline furious. I was slowly becoming disenchanted throughout season 3. The ferry crash incident was enough to almost cause me to call it quits with the show but I stuck through it. I felt like the season progressively got worse and worse... it went from being different from anything on TV as far as how it was written to being just another ER... an episode would be billed as having some outrageous tragedy that miraculously everyone (except minor characters) would survive.
And I officially lost it when George and Izzie got together. Though I suppose it's only fitting that Hollywood would have him leave his completely gorgeous yet more normal-looking wife for the skinny modelesque blonde who appears to have just stepped off of the pages of Vogue and into a pair of scrubs. I hope that this storyline has more growing to do because right now, to me, Izzie is the Angelina and Callie is the Jennifer. And for the record, I still think Izzie would be better with Sloan or Alex.
BUT... now after all of my complaining, on to season 4 (or season 1 as far as PP goes).
Grey's is gradually getting back into my good graces... though the McDreamy/Meredith storyline is driving me crazy. I think that Rhimes simply felt like she needed to tear them apart because the show did so well when all of the audience was sitting there waiting for them to get together. But this most recent break up has caused me to hope they remain apart. Why? Because Meredith has become simply unlikeable and I think he deserves better. If they really wanted some must-see-TV, why not have Izzie break up THAT relationship? Or maybe Alex? I think Derek deserves someone who isn't completely unhinged and uncaring, which is the way they have made her seem.
The things I like: Sloan/Derek gradually becoming friends again, the Callie/Bailey dynamic, and all things Alex (that's a given). The Burke departure was definitely necessary in my eyes as far as Isaiah Washington goes, but I do still find myself missing the character. The Lexie factor hasn't been as hateable as I expected, either. I figured she was going to be used to drive a wedge further between Meredith and Derek but the main purpose she's serving to me is to make Meredith more unlikeable. And if that's what Shonda is going for... then kudos because it's working.
Private Practice
As far as the spin-off... I am happy to report that I almost prefer it to Greys. While I am bummed with the re-cast of Naomi, I hardly even noticed in episode two. Even though the show is supposed to be all about Addison, she's almost a Meredith-esque character to me. I find myself having a very hard time being sympathetic towards her. On the other hand, Violet and Pete are fabulously distraught and I want nothing more than for them to be happy. And Sam? He can do whatever he wants as long as he doesn't alter his appearance. As far as I'm concerned, Taye Diggs is the closest physical manifestation of perfection that you will find.
I'm definitely pulling for PP. I did love the fact that Shonda made an early attempt at renaming the female anatomy once again. On Grey's it was vajayjay and on PP it was hoo-haa. She must have teenagers.
While Private Practice doesn't make as big of a splash as Greys did in its premiere, I definitely think there's something there. The three women have great chemistry together and the only lack of chemistry among the cast for me is between Naomi and Dell, which is where you miss Merrin Dungey the most. All in all, it's worth a watch and if you're not caught up with it yet... take a sec and check it out. It'll surprise you.
