It's oh-so-trendy to hate the Yankees

I will never be one to LIKE the Yankees and it's a rare occasion when you'll actually catch me cheering for them. That being said, I do find it to be somewhat annoying that people hate a team because it's fashionable to hate them. If you hate the Red Sox as well, then by all means, be a Yankee hater. Or if you're a die hard (and legitimately so) Red Sox fan, then have at it as well. I just don't get people who love the Red Sox but hate the Yankees when, to me, they're pretty much one in the same. I've still yet to hear a legitimate argument (that doesn't equate to jealousy) for hatred of Derek Jeter. He doesn't whine. He's a class act off the field. He plays with as much heart as anyone. And he was the ONE person who didn't throw a tantrum about the fact that Justin Morneau won the MVP over him. Sure, he has ugly hair... but that's no reason to hate a man.

You could say that the Yankees have A-Rod and Giambi but let me counter with this... the Red Sox have Curt Schilling (possibly one of the most loud-mouthed, rude players in the game) and Manny Ramirez. So one off-sets the other in my opinion... and I'll even give the hateability edge to the Red Sox in this case because of Curt Schilling. He comes in second only to AJ Pierzynski in my book.

How about the old "the Yankees are trying to buy a championship" argument? Well look at it this way... while the Red Sox payroll is lower, when a player such as a Johan Santana becomes available, which TWO teams are going to be in the running to up the bids for him and take him from my beloved Twins? I think we all know the answer.

And lastly, I've heard the "asshole fans" argument. Really? The Yankees have worse fans than the Red Sox? The Red Sox are possibly the most bandwagon team (outside of New England, I'm not knocking Bostonites) in all of sports. Ironically when the Red Sox have good years, I find that all sorts of new fans pop up in my region of the US. They have no family ties to the team and no reason to cheer for them other than that they're good and they have a plurality of fans in the country among all other teams.

I'm really just rambling but this is a conversation I've been having for the last few days off and on. Hate the Yankees all you want... but unless you can find me a legitimate excuse (the only one at this point being that you're a LIFELONG Red Sox fan)... you better not like those guys from Boston either because the two teams couldn't really be much more alike in my eyes.

That being said... go Rockies and go D-Backs!!!
